Rain gardens and wet areas

Rain gardens and wet areas

Plants in this collection are great for rain gardens and soggy areas of the yard. Some of these plants can also withstand at least some summer drought but not all so please be aware of the summer watering requirements of these wet tolerant plants.

Rain gardens are a shallow planted depression that captures rain water (from roofs or other impermeable surfaces) and naturally filters the water to keep pollutants out of our rivers. The City of Portland may give a discount on water/sewer bills for disconnecting gutter downspouts through their Clean River Rewards program and they have many resources for disconnecting downspouts including information on planning a building rain gardens.
